Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, each year it is visited by millions of travelers from many different countries. What sets this small country apart from others in Europe is its rich cultural history and the fact that it contains hundreds if not thousands of islands, each one with its own unique atmosphere and “style”. Greece is not only very popular with vacation goers though, it is also a very popular honeymoon destination. A Greek honeymoon is becoming the dream of thousands of couples everyday and many of them actually make that dream come true.
When it comes to honeymoons, Greece is definitely one of the best places because the country enjoys mild and sunny weather all year round and it is also home to some spectacular landscapes that can serve as backdrops to very impressive and romantic honeymoon photos. Furthermore, in some places in Greece one can feel like having transported to another place and time thanks to the classical architecture and the archaeological sites that the country is full of.
When it comes to enjoying the perfect honeymoon, choosing the right destination is extremely important and Greece has many popular honeymoon destinations for a couple to choose from. There are some however that manage to stand out and the island of Rhodes is definitely one of them. Let’s find out why.
What sets apart Rhodes from other islands in Greece is the fact that it manages to enjoy about 330 days on sunny weather, on average, each year! What this means is that unless you visit this island during the heart of winter, chances are that the weather will be sunny and warm for the entirety of your stay there, so you can plan any outdoor activity or trip without worrying about the weather. It’s no wonder that the ancient inhabitants of the island worshipped the sun god Helios and had dedicated the island and the city of Rhodes to him. Speaking of the city of Rhodes…
A journey to the past
Rhodes has been inhabited pretty much since the dawn of civilization in Greece and as such, many very impressive ancient ruins and artefacts can be found there. It was even home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Colossus of Rhodes. By far the most impressive – and most romantic – site of the island is the walled city at the heart of the city of Rhodes, the biggest city on the island. The island was taken over by the Knights of the order of Saint John during Medieval times and they built a walled city complete with towers and moats that remains pretty much intact nowadays and is the island’s biggest attraction. Walking through the cobbled alleyways of the “old town” you will feel like you have stepped back in time or like starring in an episode of Game of Thrones! It goes without saying that you can take some very romantic walks there, especially during the night-time!
Gorgeous beaches and landscapes
Rhodes is also known for its gorgeous beaches, most of which are easily accessible through public transport. You can swim on the crystal clear waters of the “Anthoy Quinn” beach named after the famous movie star because he enjoyed swimming there while shooting the movie “Guns of Navarrone” on the island. On Lindos you can swim under the shadow of the ancient acropolis built on the nearby cliffs. This is also where Saint Paul landed when he brought Christianity to the island. Finally, on Psaronisi you can actually swim to a small island and enjoy water sports and other activities.
